Agents
Assumer ships with a build agent that makes changes and a read-only plan agent that analyses first, plus subagents for research and your own custom agents.
An agent is a set of instructions, tools and permissions that Assumer uses to work on your request. You can switch agents at any time during a session.
Primary agents
| Agent | What it does | Can edit files? |
|---|---|---|
| build | The default agent. Reads your code, edits files, runs commands and tests. | Yes |
| plan | Analyses the codebase and proposes an approach without changing anything. | No (only plan and spec notes) |
Press Tab in the terminal UI to switch between build and plan, or open the agent list with /agents.
A good habit for anything non-trivial: start in plan, agree on the approach and the files involved, then press Tab and let build carry it out.
Subagents
For focused research, the main agent can hand work to a subagent with the task tool. Subagents such as general and explore search the codebase or the web and report back, so the main session keeps a clean context during long tasks.
Custom agents
Create your own agent with a custom prompt, its own tool set and its own permissions:
assumer agent create
assumer agent list
Typical custom agents are a reviewer that can read but not write, a docs agent that only edits Markdown, or a migration agent with extra instructions for one large change.
Next steps
- Tools: what agents can do.
- Permissions: limit what each agent is allowed to run.
- Rules files: give every agent project-specific instructions.
